Hisui Apartment & Gallery

The client, Ms. Hiromi Midorikawa, was a gentle yet passionate and affectionate woman, so captivating that one couldn't help but be enchanted by her presence. This is a project where she transformed her grandparents' old house, where her father grew up, into a new open space in the town. HARKEN was responsible for concept making, graphic design, and art direction.

Unswayed by the times, a steadfast presence

The area where Hisui Apartment & Gallery stands, Jingu-mae, has been a place where history and culture intertwine since ancient times. The urban space here is constantly undergoing vigorous changes, enveloped by the hustle and bustle of people coming and going. By adopting the name "Apartment" for this location, she expresses her intention to blend with this ever-evolving city while creating a nostalgic and welcoming place where everyone can feel at home. She straightforwardly states, "I want to create a place that will hold value even 30 years from now.

What does the concept of "Halekulani" mean to the family?

As I delved into each of her and her father's memories to learn more about this house, the name of the Halekulani Hotel in Hawaii came up. It was a cherished family travel destination that her father loved to visit regularly. The high level of hospitality and the calming, breathtaking location made it a special place for the whole family. They aspired to recreate a space filled with love, reminiscent of the moments of contentment and richness experienced by her father, and thus the concept of the "Halekulani" was born.

Logo design

The logo design was created by graphic designer Shota Urakawa. After conducting multiple interviews and discussions, the design was centered around "The history and memories of the Midorikawa family, the concept of Halekulani, and a future landscape blending with the town." The image of the fireworks she gazed at in her childhood from this building remains unforgettable to her. Now, someone else will live here and witness the summer nights just as she did, leaning out from this place. With respect for the building's context as a place filled with memories, the logo was designed to symbolize the physical edges of the building that will remain constant for both the past and future, allowing new people to create their own memories here. The blue color represents the transparent sea and azure sky they observed from Halekulani. The design, centered around the initial "H," highlights the various roles of each layer, representing the organic fluidity of the building, which changes its appearance over time, assuming different roles. The distinctive shapes and the emerging whitespace in the design represent the unpredictable diversity of the town and the flow of people.
