Routine Records

Routine Records

The welfare experimental unit "Heralbonny," which primarily collaborates with authors from welfare facilities across Japan, particularly those with intellectual disabilities, has been developing various projects based on art created by these authors. As a new welfare experiment, they have launched the innovative sound project "ROUTINE RECORDS," aiming to convey the everyday sounds of people with intellectual disabilities to society through "music" and promote a change in perception among the audience. As the first installment, they held the exhibition "lab.5 ROUTINE RECORDS" at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa. HARKEN was responsible for the project's planning and creative direction.

Each person's daily life and the ambient sounds echoing from there have a special melody.

Repeating the same actions multiple times every day, such as scanning one's face on a copier or crinkling a bag of potato chips. These seemingly peculiar behavioral characteristics are their everyday routines, bringing them a sense of calmness and expressing their feelings. In this project, we focus on the "ambient sounds" arising from these actions and capture various sounds as part of "ROUTINE RECORDS."

Creating their own music with their own hands, giving birth to their unique expression.

In the center of the space, there is a DJ booth where visitors can mix the collected routine sounds and create original tracks. The everyday routines of individuals become "music," and by turning these sounds into music with their own hands, it attempts to bridge the gap between people with intellectual disabilities and visitors, creating a seamless connection to their daily lives. Additionally, original tracks using routine sounds by track maker Kan Sano were also created.

Visualize with symbols.

The logo, posters, and special website visuals are designed around ASCII art (a form of art created by combining characters and symbols). The design aims to visualize the process of routine symbols accumulating into music (ASCII art) and taking on new meanings in this exhibition. Each sound is displayed as a record, capturing the image of a routine performer playing routine sounds and expressing it through ASCII art.

"Everyday Sounds" that can be experienced from multiple perspectives.

Visitors can take a complete tour around the exhibition space to gain a multifaceted understanding of the various sounds derived from the daily lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities and the creative process behind them. In the DJ booth, they can interact with the items used in the routine to create music by pressing corresponding numbered buttons to play specific sounds.

Mysterious, endearing, and filled with enigmatic tones.

The exhibition "lab.5 ROUTINE RECORDS" is just the starting point of the project. This project aims to repeatedly replay memories of the heart and will continue into the future. There are countless "ROUTINE RECORDS" created by individuals with intellectual disabilities, and through sound, they will showcase their uniqueness to the world, fostering positive changes in people's perception of welfare and intellectual disabilities. This is the ongoing goal.
