Japan Botanical Lab

This is not client work; it is my own venture established with my friend, Tomoka Furuya. Since HARKEN (="myself") is an integral part of the story, I decided to include it here, just like other projects. Running my personal business and an accompanying venture is incredibly fascinating. The Japan Botanical Institute has research bases across the country and is a research institution that explores the potential of vegetation in rural areas. Our goal is to realize a daily life where Japan's trees and lesser-known wildflowers are an integral part. The valorization of Japan's primitive plant resources will lead to the revitalization of local industries, sustainable food supply, and enhance international competitiveness. To achieve these objectives, we venture into rural areas across the country today, collecting, recording, and presenting our findings to experiment with the value enhancement of these delicious resources.

One of them: Collection, Recording, and Presentation.

Collecting valuable plants that lie dormant in rural areas across the country, recording their history and value, and presenting the results of our explorations into new uses for these plants. These activities form the foundation of our endeavors and are of semi-permanent nature. For example, in the Boso Peninsula of Chiba, native Japanese pepper lies dormant, and in the mountainous regions of Okinawa, domestically grown cinnamon exists. Japan's plants are incredibly delicious and fascinating.

The second one: Cultivation of Model Mountains.

The Japan Botanical lab will create a "Living Botanical Garden," called "Model Mountains," where valuable plants collected from various regions across the country will be gathered in one place. Visitors to this mountain will have the opportunity to explore the potential of rural area plants.

Please translate into English

The Japan Botanical lab aims to support the "New Utilization of Rural Area Resources" and establish a collaborative partnership with mountains that agree and cooperate with this mission, referred to as "Partner Mountains." We strive to build beneficial relationships with mountains across the country based on the differences in vegetation and forestry conditions.

The fourth one: The future we aspire to.

The goals of "One," "Two," and "Three" mentioned above all revolve around the consistent vision of realizing a future where Japan's rural area plants naturally become part of daily meals and life. In this process, we also engage in product development and branding using local plants, contributing to regional revitalization and promoting New Green Tourism ventures based on the utilization of regional vegetation. Just as the concept of spices did not exist in Japan before the Meiji era and curry was not known, using coniferous forests to season and grill chicken may not immediately resonate now. However, in the near future, we dream of a scenario where the blessings of rural areas grace our kitchens as seasonings, and Japanese aromatic woods stand alongside musk as beloved fragrance notes.
